December Monthly Update

As you may remember back in September I had set a goal to lose 7 pounds a month, each month from September through December. That was my weight loss goal. Then in late November I decided I was going to set some additional goals to help me get through the holidays focused and on plan and that would ensure I had a little fun too. So let’s see how I did with my December, 2011 goals.

Lose seven pounds: my starting weight December 1st was 193.0 pounds, my weight January 1st was 179.4 for a total loss of 13.6 pounds! Not only did I hit my goal, I almost doubled it.

-Hit 186 pounds by the end of the year. See above 🙂

 -Complete the Sisterhood’s 25 days of fitness challenge: not only did I exercise all 25 days of the 25 day challenge, I finished the month out strong and exercised every day in December. 31 for 31, baby!

Plan out workouts while my parents are in town: it wasn’t always easy but I somehow managed to pull myself out of bed every day at 4am so I could go to the gym before work. I am pretty sure the only reason I was able to do it was because I had everything planned out.

– Plan out some fun things to do while my parents are in town: I had so much fun with my parents while they were here. We did get to do some of the things planned but not all of them. My dad is still having complications from the surgery he had in August that limited what he was able to do. All in all everyone had a great time. It was a fabulous and very relaxing Christmas!

– Hit the gym at least once a week with Paul: I went to the gym at least once a week (sometimes even 3 or 4 times) with Paul and it was awesome.

 – Blog three times a week: on average I blogged 3 times I week, I think I had 17 posts for the month, but there was a week in there where I only got two posts in.

 – Donate to charity: It took me until the end of the month but I was able to get a few (small) donations made before the end of the year 🙂

– Try a new recipe every week: Although I couldn’t name every recipe I tried off the top of my head I for certain tried at least one a week.

Bake Paul’s very belated birthday cookies: this is so sad. I still never made Paul’s birthday cookies. I did, however, make him three other types of cookies so I am thinking I am off the hook. Hopefully 😉

I didn’t set any new goals for January (aside from my resolutions) and I haven’t set a weight loss goal for the month. I am not sure I will either. I was updating my weight loss goals page on the blog the other day and I added my final two goals; reach a healthy weight and maintain it. That’s it. Those are my last two goals as far as my weight goes. I am just under thirty pounds from being at a healthy weight and normal BMI and I am ok with not setting any goals for how quickly I can get there. I am putting my health first and every decision I make is to help get me healthier so I know I will get there. That’s about all I have to say about that.

I hope you were able to read my post from Friday about the New You Challenge. If you are interested in participating you can start at any time. This is a personal challenge, not a competition, so please feel free to start up whenever you can.

One last thing before I go. I just have to point out that December was a crazy month for me weight loss wise. It was my largest monthly loss and percentage. I follow the Weight Watchers plan. I use all my daily points. I eat some of my weekly points too. I am not starving myself or doing anything in an unhealthy manner to create a big loss. Yes, I did workout every day in December but I am pretty sure I did every day in November too, that’s not anything new. I did however learn that after 12 weeks of following a plant-based/vegan diet your body reaches its full potential. December 31st marked 12 weeks for me eating vegan and I am pretty sure that is a very big reason I had such high numbers this month. Who knows. I just don’t want you to read this and feel discouraged because you didn’t lose the same amount I did this month. We are all different, our bodies are different. Even if you and I weighed the same and were the same height and ate the same foods there is no guarantee we would lose the same. Embrace the journey you are on and know that making your health your priority will get you to where you need to be.

Monday Randomness!

I’m here…I’m alive….and I am almost ready for the parents to arrive in a few days. Christmas shopping- finished! Decorating (what little we decided to do this year) – finished! Grocery shopping and cooking for the week- finished! The only thing I have left to do is some cleaning, wrap presents and possibly bake some cookies but most of those things can be done while my parents are here. So, yay! I am pretty much ready for the holiday weeks to begin!

Last week I hit a huge milestone and although I did post about it on Facebook and Twitter I did not mention it on my blog. The reason why I hadn’t mentioned hitting my 100 pounds lost milestone yet is because I wanted to write this epic post thanking everyone who has helped me along the way. Unfortunately I have really struggled with writing it so over the weekend I decided that I would turn the blog post into a vlog. It will be much easier for me to convey how I feel if I just did it on video so hopefully in the next week or so I can get some time to record my thanks to you all. In the meantime let me just say that I know that I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for Paul, my friends (that’s you 🙂 ) , family, WW members, trainers, teachers/mentors, and co-workers who have been super supportive throughout this whole process. I love you all very much and owe you big time! I only hope that one day I can return the support and encouragement you have showed me!

As you know, I have been participating in the 25 Days of Fitness Challenge (O’ Fitness Tree) from the Sisterhood and am happy to announce that I have exercised every day so far this month and my tree now has 18 shiny stickers to show for it. Yay! I have an exercise plan for 6 of the remaining 7 days in the challenge- the only day I am still not sure on is Christmas. Synergy, Club KO and the post gym will all be closed on Christmas day so my plan is tentatively to walk with Maggie, run/walk with Paul or do an exercise DVD. What I will end up doing really just depends on the weather. I know I will get some exercise in though I am just not sure what yet.

With the holidays here and my more chaotic schedule I have started going to the gym on post pretty frequently. At first I started going because it was convenient and something I could do with Paul. Now I love going (weird, I know) so I can ride the stationary bike and sit in the sauna. Just last week I decided to ride 26.2 miles on the bike to see if I could and I did in just a little over 84 minutes. Being able to do that made me feel great not only because I achieved something I set out to do but because I was doing an activity I hadn’t previously been able to do because of my weight and physical condition. When I first started exercising I could not ride the regular upright bikes so I would ride the recumbent bike at the gym. Then when I tried to ride an upright in November I was shocked that not only I was able to ride it but that I loved it. Fueled by my new found fitness capabilities (and a new pair of minimalist sneakers) I decided to test out my running ability yesterday on the treadmill on the gym. I ran a half mile in 5 minutes and 45 seconds. To most people that probably doesn’t seem like anything special, especially if you are a runner, but to me it was like I just climbed Everest. The longest I have run at one time was maybe a minute and a half so to be able to run for almost six minutes I was pretty freaking excited. Today I heading to the gym after work to hit the bike and treadmill again and will keep you posted if I reach any new distances in the future.

In other, non-weight loss related news, I had mentioned that Paul and I were playing each other in the playoffs for our fantasy football leagues but I haven’t given you any news since. That is because of two things; one being that one of the leagues we are in wasn’t in playoffs the week Paul and I played each other- it was still the regular season. I beat him but that didn’t matter too much, we both made it into this week’s first round of the playoffs where I won my game and he lost (to my father) his. The way it looks to me is that next week will be the final playoff game and I will be playing for the championship against the number 1 seed. Not likely I will win, the guy I am up against went undefeated this season, but who knows. In the other league Paul and I did play against each other in the first round. The league is set up kind of strange in that the first round of the playoffs lasts two weeks- two teams play each other for two weeks and it is the cumulative score of those two weeks that decide the winner. Right now I am up 21 points over Paul but we both have guys playing in tonight’s game; I have Akers and Mendenhall and he has Wallace so it is still anyone’s game. I will let you know how it all pans out. I am sure Paul is thrilled that my dad will be here for a week gloating about beating him in the playoffs 😉

Oh, and one last thing. Paul and I went to the Alamo Drafthouse (a super awesome movie theater that serves food and beer/wine) to go see Love Actually last Wednesday which was such a great way to spend the night. We both love that movie and it was fun to be able to see it in the theater together. If you haven’t seen this movie you should go and rent it now! It’s such a great movie! I haven’t seen any other Christmas movies yet but I am sure I will over the weekend. Speaking of the Drafthouse I am sure I will be there with my parents on Christmas day to go see a movie. I am guessing we’ll go see the new Sherlock Holmes (we saw the first one on Christmas day two years ago when they were here- and they LOVE the Drafthouse) or we’ll see the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Not sure which we’ll pick but if you have an opinion on one versus the other please feel free to share.

Three Things Thursday

25 Days of Fitness Challenge

Last Thursday kicked off the 25 days of fitness (O’ Fitness Tree) challenge and so I posted my week long plan of how I would be getting in my activity. I am happy to report I went 7 for 7 this past week even though I did tweak my activity plan slightly. As you know, the
Nia White Belt Intensive started last Thursday so I was able to get four days (Thursday through Sunday) of activity in because of it. Monday I went to the lunchtime yoga class offered at my place of work but instead of boxing that evening (I did not have the energy to box after the long weekend) I went to the gym and biked and sat in the sauna. Tuesday I went to Nia as planned. Yesterday I went to the
lunchtime yoga class and then instead of doing my normal hot Vinyasa
yoga class I went to Nia. This change had nothing to do with how I felt energy wise but was due to my work schedule and the fact that Paul had 24-hour duty so I needed to be home to take care of the doggies and Nia got me home sooner. My poor dogs; by the time I got
home last night they just looked like they were on the verge of exploding. I think Maggie would have run straight through the back door to get outside if I wasn’t there to open it for her.

Keeping with last week’s post here is my plan for this upcoming week.

Thursday- Nia class after work followed by the gym to bike and hit the sauna.

Friday through Sunday – Nia White Belt Intensive

Monday- yoga at work and Thai yoga session after work with Tricia.

Tuesday- boxing

Wednesday- yoga at work and hot Vinyasa yoga after work

Battle of the Lees

Paul and I both participate in the same two fantasy football leagues; one is run by my father and is made up of his friends plus my mom, Paul and myself. The other league is run by one of Paul’s army buddies and consists of a bunch of army dudes, and me. This week is the first week of playoffs for both leagues. I am happy to announce that Paul and I both made it to the playoffs. Yay! Unfortunately we have to play against each other. Boo! In BOTH leagues! Double Boo! How does that
even happen? Rhetorical question, I know how it happens but come on-
what are the odds? 🙂 I know you are thinking that I want to beat Paul
in both leagues and be crowned (with a crown I will make myself) the
ultimate fantasy footballer in the Lee household but you would be wrong. Ok, just slightly wrong- I do kind of want a crown. No, the best case scenario is that we each win one game so that way both of us can continue playing for at least another week and both of us stand a chance at winning the whole thing. I would prefer to win in my Dad’s
league and have Paul win in the Army one because I have a better, more
reliable team in my Dad’s league and based off of our teams I am thinking that is exactly what will happen. I will make sure to let you know what happens on Tuesday after all is said and done.

Christmas

I received my first Christmas card yesterday and it made me realize
that the only Christmas like thing in our house right now is Paul’s Fitness Tree hanging on the fridge. Today I started thinking about the time left between now and when my parents arrive (December 21st) and everything that needs to be done in preparation. I have some Christmas shopping done but I still need to buy for Paul, my mom and the dogs. What? You don’t give your dogs presents? That’s my favorite part of Christmas. We buy them a whole mess of cheap toys and let them go
crazy for the day. It takes a few weeks to get rid of all the stuffing and toy remnants but it sure is entertaining to watch.

I bought Christmas cards but haven’t filled them out yet. If I was smart I would have brought them to work today and did that during my lunch break. We need to clean and get the spare room set up for my parents. Right now it has become a depository for junk that doesn’t have a home and the ‘to be shredded’ pile of papers. It’s the least
used room and, of course, the one in the worst shape. We also need to
decorate and order our meals from Whole Foods. There are two weekends
left for me to get everything done however I will probably not be able
to do any of it this weekend because of the Nia WBI so it is time for me to put together a schedule so I can make I can get all of this taken care of by the 20th. It’s times like this when being a planner comes in handy. On the upside, my Christmas list is done 🙂

While I am on the topic of Christmas, I wanted to ask you what are your favorite holiday movies? I was thinking about a few of mine as I wrote this post. I love watching ‘A Christmas Story’ and ‘Love Actually’ ever year. ‘A Christmas Story’ was the movie of choice in my household growing up- we watched it at least once every year. When Paul and I lived in Ohio my mom came to visit us for Christmas one
year and we went to Cleveland to see the house from the movie. It was
pretty cool to see and there was even a small gift shop up the street from the home where you could buy anything Christmas Story related including the famous leg lamp.

It was time to replace my scale after a few weeks of being somewhat unreliable, i.e. not turning on, not detecting weight/pressure, and although it isn’t dead completely I just couldn’t deal with the uncertainty anymore.

Since I finished off my tub of Amazing Grass Chocolate Superfood I decided to try out some of their other flavors. Today I used Amazing Grass Orange Dreamsicle Superfood (which I was kind of hesitant to buy) in my smoothie and it was fabulous!

Monthly Updates and Events

Holy smokes, today is December 1st. Although I am not shocked by the date, I have been waiting for this day to come for months, it certainly doesn’t feel like December 1st for me. That’s probably because I live in Texas and was just walking around downtown on my lunch break sans coat- its 74 degrees outside right now. Isn’t that crazy? I am very excited that December is here. December brings Christmas and a visit from my parents as well as my Nia White Belt Intensive and the 25 Days of Fitness challenge (through the Sisterhood) both of which start today. This month is going to be busy but I know it will be great!

Today was also exciting because it was my monthly weigh in to see if I reached my November goal of losing seven pounds. I should note that I try to measure myself on the first day of every month but I had an awful nightmare last night and woke up 30 minutes later than planned so I didn’t have the time this morning but I will make sure to do it tomorrow and post my results on the measurements page. I did have time enough to weigh myself and take my BMI and body fat percentage and here are the results.

Weight 11/1- 205.0 pounds, weight 12/1- 193.0 pounds

Monthly loss: 12 pounds! Woot! Goal met!

BMI 11/1- 33.6, BMI 12/1- 31.6- down to whole points! Yay!

I would like to note something here; when I first started tracking BMI/body fat 8 months ago my BMI was 45.2 which put me in the worst category, obese class III, and now I am less than two points away from the overweight category. That makes me so happy being so close to mobbing from obese to overweight because after that comes normal/average- where I am working hard to get to.

Body Fat Percentage 11/1- 35.2%, BF percentage 12/1- 33.8%- a change of 1.4%

My initial body fat percentage on 4/2 was 41.8% (which is crazy) so I am happy to be down 8% in eight months. That’s progress, baby!

My Nia White Belt Intensive starts this evening. I will be heading to the Synergy Studio straight from work to dance with the 530p class and then our training officially begins immediately afterwards. Tonight is only a couple of hours and they expect us to be finished by 830p. The rest of my training schedule is as follows; this weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday 7am-645pm. Back to work Monday through Thursday (6am-5p) and then the following weekend I will complete the Nia WBI; training classes Friday & Saturday 7am-645p and then Sunday 7am-3pm. After we finish at 3p on Sunday December 11 there is a 4pm Nia class and I will be participating in that as well. My friend KH, whom I box with, said she will come to the class to celebrate with me completing the WBI. KH also came to the studio on Thanksgiving for Nia and she really liked it so I was really glad she was willing to come back and dance with me again. I kind of have an idea of what to expect for the six days I will be in training as my friend Simply Sidney just went through it a few weeks ago but I am sure it will be much more intense, informative and eye-opening than I can imagine. I am excited though and I can’t wait to come back and talk about with you once I have finished. Until then, here is (vague) description of what the Nia White Belt Intensive entails.

“The Nia White Belt Training is the first level of a five-belt training series that presents a body-centered approach to health, wellness and fitness. If you have a desire to share Nia in a professional capacity, the White Belt Training is your entryway into teaching. Those who choose to pursue the path of personal enrichment use this training as a starting point for becoming a master student.

Over the course of one week, you will comprehensively explore physical sensation through five core-competency areas of study including movement, music, anatomy, science and philosophy. This joyful journey into the self is instrumental in helping you develop body knowing by learning to listen, interpret and consciously respond to the information your body communicates to you via sensation.”

The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans has come up with a great challenge to help us all keep active this holiday season- the O Fitness Tree 25 days of exercise challenge. I keep calling it the 25 days of fitness because for whatever reason that’s what is stuck in my head. They provided us a pdf of a Christmas tree (that looks like an advent calendar) and every day we exercise we give ourselves a sticker. Currently my tree is bare and hanging up at my desk but when I am back in the office Monday I will be decorating it with four stickers 🙂 There is also a tree hanging up on my fridge but it’s not mine; it’s Pauls. He decided to do the challenge with me to be supportive which just made me so happy. This morning I saw the tree and the pack of stickers hanging on the fridge and I almost started crying. I know it seems trivial but having him support me through things like this means the world to me. I am one lucky girl!

Since I am going to be out of commission the next few days I decided to post my fitness plan for the next week and then next Thursday I will report back as to how I did and show you pictures of my tree. I mentioned earlier in the post how I am excited that my parents are coming for Christmas. I mentioned the other day that I wanted to plan some fun things to do while they are here. Yesterday I got an emailed monthly newsletter from Jodi Roberts, who does the Sound Journey sessions with gongs and Tibetan bowls, and she has a concert on December 21st. The event is the Christmas Solstice Bells and Bowls Concert at the Boerne Yoga Center so I checked with my parents and they want to go. So there’s one activity planned; only 6 more days to fill 😉 I frequently talk to my parents about the things I do and although I would love for them to take a Nia or Journey Dance class I know they can’t do that so I am glad they can do this with me. They are hippies so this is right up their alley!
